Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) is continuing to combat a fire at an animal feed manufacturing facility in Bomaderry on the state’s South Coast.

FRNSW firefighters responded to an automatic fire alarm at the facility in Bolong Road just before 9.30 am on Monday. On arrival, the crews found a smouldering fire in a silo, containing 600 tons of pelletised and powdered feed.

Mitigating the situation

Although the deep seated fire in the silo continues to smoulder, firefighters have stabilized the situation by applying bulk supplies of carbon dioxide to reduce the temperature of the feed and the intensity of the fire.

The carbon dioxide also provides a more inert atmosphere above the product to minimize the impact of any dust explosion that may arise as the silo is emptied.

Greg Buckley said fires in silos are difficult to extinguish due to limited access

FRNSW Chief Superintendent - Greg Buckley said fires in silos are difficult to extinguish due to limited access.

"These types of fires are difficult to access and hazardous because of the risk of a dust explosion," said Chief Superintendent Buckley, adding "Firefighters, assisted by on-site experts, are working around the clock to remove the smouldering contents however operations are expected to continue well into the weekend."

Restricted access zone

With the incident under control, FRNSW has reduced the initial exclusion zone in the area, enabling occupants of adjoining properties to return. Bolong Road has been reopened with a reduced speed limit.

However, a restricted access zone is still in force on the site. FRNSW, including HAZMAT specialists, remain on scene and continue to work with all emergency services and on-site facility engineers to resolve this complex incident.
