Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) firefighters are competing in a special cricket series in Sydney later this month, aimed at raising funds and awareness for the Black Dog Institute’s fight against mental illness.

The firefighters are taking part in the Defence and Emergency Services cricket gala day on Wednesday (25 September) at Mona Park in Auburn.

Funds for research

Competitive and colourful cricket with old rivalries renewed and new friendships formed

Organised by the NSW Police cricket club, the round robin will see teams from FRNSW, Police, NSW Ambulance and the Australian Army compete in 10-over matches for charity.

While the day will feature exciting, competitive and colourful cricket with old rivalries renewed and new friendships formed, it will importantly raise funds for research, education and innovation with Team Black Dog, sharing its vision for a mentally healthier world.

Emergency services

It’s estimated that one in five Australians is affected by depression and anxiety every year, and emergency services and defence force staff are no strangers to the impact. FRNSW is keen securing the ‘bragging rights’ on the day. The FRNSW XI boasts an aggressive top order, featuring firefighters Mark Graham and Joey Clarke.

The team will also count on the reliable glovework of Cam Wheatley behind the stumps and a bowling attack led by the searing pacemen, Dave Ince and Terry Nicholas, supported by spin kings, Wesley Haynes and Clint Egan.
